Potassium Bicarbonate (KHCO₃) is a versatile compound used as a fungicide in organic agriculture, a food-grade leavening agent (E501ii), a fire suppressant, and a pharmaceutical excipient. In crop protection, foliar-applied potassium bicarbonate disrupts fungal cell membranes at contact, providing effective control of powdery mildew, Botrytis, and other surface pathogens without chemical residues. How Potassium Bicarbonate Works
As a foliar fungicide, KHCO₃ disrupts the osmotic balance and pH of fungal cell membranes upon contact, causing cell lysis. It is effective against powdery mildew (Erysiphe, Pedosphere), Botrytis cinerea, and Alternaria. The potassium ion is absorbed through the leaf surface, providing supplemental K nutrition. The bicarbonate anion raises leaf surface pH, creating an unfavourable environment for fungal spore germination.
