How Potassium Bicarbonate Works
As a foliar fungicide, KHCO₃ disrupts the osmotic balance and pH of fungal cell membranes upon contact, causing cell lysis. It is effective against powdery mildew (Erysiphe, Podosphaera), Botrytis cinerea, and Alternaria. The potassium ion is absorbed through the leaf surface, providing supplemental K nutrition. The bicarbonate anion raises leaf surface pH, creating an unfavorable environment for fungal spore germination.
