Product Overview
Superphosphoric Acid (SPA, 68-76% P₂O₅) is a concentrated polyphosphoric acid produced by evaporating wet-process phosphoric acid beyond 54% P₂O₅. SPA serves as the primary raw material for liquid fertilizer manufacturing (APP, liquid TSP) and as a specialty industrial chemical. Its high polyphosphate content (50-70% of total P as polyphosphate) gives it superior micronutrient chelation properties compared to regular phosphoric acid. Dongkwang Poland facilitates supply from major production centres.
How Superphosphoric Acid (SPA) Works
SPA contains a mixture of orthophosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids (pyro-, tripoly-, and higher chain-length polymers). The polyphosphate fraction chelates divalent cations (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe³⁺, Al³⁺) that would otherwise precipitate orthophosphate in concentrated solutions. This property allows much higher phosphorus concentrations in liquid fertilizers than achievable with regular H₃PO₄, and keeps micronutrient additives in solution.
Key Benefits
Application Guide
Primary use: production of APP (10-34-0) and other liquid phosphate fertilizers through ammoniation. Industrial: specialty acid cleaning where high-purity polyphosphate is needed. Not used for direct application — requires neutralisation and dilution before agricultural use. Handle with same protocols as 85% H₃PO₄ with additional precautions for higher viscosity and concentration.
Ideal For
Storage & Handling
Store in HDPE or rubber-lined tanks at 40-60°C to maintain fluidity (SPA crystallises below 30-40°C depending on grade). Highly corrosive — same PPE and equipment requirements as 85% H₃PO₄. ADR Class 8 for transport. Heated tanker transport may be required. Shelf life: effectively unlimited when properly stored.
