Product Overview
Sodium Nitrate (NaNO₃, Chile Saltpeter) is a natural mineral nitrogen source containing 16% nitrate-nitrogen and 26% sodium. Historically mined from the Atacama Desert, sodium nitrate remains a premium nitrogen source for specialty applications including organic agriculture (where approved by certifier), curing of meats, glass manufacturing, and as a heat transfer medium in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. Dongkwang Poland supplies both natural-grade and synthetic-grade sodium nitrate for agricultural and industrial markets.
How Sodium Nitrate (Chile Saltpeter) Works
Sodium nitrate provides 100% nitrate-nitrogen — the most immediately plant-available nitrogen form. Unlike ammonium-based fertilizers, nitrate requires no soil microbial conversion before plant uptake, enabling rapid response within hours of application. The sodium component, while not an essential plant nutrient, can partially substitute for potassium in osmotic regulation in sodium-tolerant crops. In CSP applications, molten NaNO₃/KNO₃ mixtures serve as heat storage media operating at 300-550°C.
Key Benefits
Application Guide
Agriculture: 200-400 kg/ha as top-dress for vegetables and specialty crops on non-sodic soils. Industrial: per specification for glass batch, metal treatment, or CSP applications. Food: as per regulation for curing salt formulations. Avoid use on sodium-sensitive crops or sodic soils. Best suited for high-value crops requiring immediate nitrogen response.
Ideal For
Storage & Handling
Store in dry, cool conditions away from combustible materials. Sodium nitrate is a strong oxidiser (GHS Category 3). Keep away from organic matter, reducing agents, and heat sources. ADR Class 5.1 for transport. Use PPE: gloves, goggles. Maximum stack height: 2 pallets. Shelf life: 36 months.
