Product Overview
Cobalt Sulphate (CoSO₄·7H₂O, 21% Co) is a critical battery material used in NMC and NCA cathode precursor production, and a specialist micronutrient for ruminant nutrition and vitamin B12 synthesis. With cobalt classified as a strategic raw material under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, supply security is paramount. Dongkwang Poland sources cobalt sulphate from responsible producers adhering to OECD Due Diligence Guidelines, ensuring ethical sourcing alongside battery-grade purity for European cathode manufacturers.
How Cobalt Sulphate (CoSO₄) Works
In battery manufacturing, CoSO₄ is co-precipitated with NiSO₄ and MnSO₄ in a CSTR (continuously stirred tank reactor) to form NMC precursor hydroxides — the key intermediate in cathode active material production. Cobalt stabilises the layered crystal structure of NMC cathodes, preventing structural collapse during charge-discharge cycles and improving cycle life. In agriculture, cobalt is essential for nitrogen-fixing bacteria (Rhizobium) and ruminant vitamin B12 synthesis.
Key Benefits
Application Guide
Battery cathode precursor: co-precipitated per NMC specification (e.g., NMC 811, NMC 622, NMC 532). Animal nutrition: 0.1-0.5 mg Co/kg dry matter in ruminant diets as cobalt supplement. Electroplating: dissolved in acid baths for decorative and wear-resistant cobalt coatings. Catalyst preparation: impregnated onto supports for Fischer-Tropsch and hydrodesulphurisation catalysts. Ceramic pigments: used for blue coloration.
Ideal For
Storage & Handling
Store in dry conditions in sealed containers. CoSO₄ is classified as harmful if swallowed and may cause skin sensitisation (GHS Category 1). Use gloves, goggles, and dust mask. Avoid release to the environment — cobalt is an aquatic toxicant. ADR Class 9 for transport (environmentally hazardous substance). Shelf life: 36 months.
