Product Overview
Cassava & Sweet Potato Fertilizer Blend (8-8-24 + 1% Zn) is a potassium-dominant root crop fertilizer designed for the unique physiology of tropical tuber crops. Cassava (Manihot esculenta) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) are heavy potassium feeders — K deficiency directly reduces root dry matter by 20-30%, undermining both food security and industrial starch production. This blend is essential for Sub-Saharan African cassava production (Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique), Southeast Asian starch industries (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia), and sweet potato production worldwide. The zinc inclusion addresses the widespread Zn deficiency in tropical soils that limits root initiation.
How Cassava & Sweet Potato Fertilizer Blend Works
Potassium (24% K₂O) drives starch synthesis and translocation from leaves to storage roots. In cassava, K-deficient plants produce roots with 20-30% less starch — a critical loss for both food and industrial (ethanol, starch) uses. The low nitrogen (8%) prevents excessive above-ground growth at the expense of root development — a common problem when farmers apply urea-heavy programs to cassava. Zinc (1%) promotes root initiation and auxin biosynthesis, determining the number of storage roots per plant.
Key Benefits
Application Guide
Split application: 300 kg/ha at planting (incorporated around the stake/slip) and 200 kg/ha at canopy closure (3-4 months after planting for cassava, 6-8 weeks for sweet potato). For mechanized cassava: band apply 5-10cm beside the planted stake. For sweet potato ridges: apply in the ridge before slip planting. Avoid late-season nitrogen which promotes canopy regrowth at the expense of root bulking.
Ideal For
Storage & Handling
Store in dry conditions. Tropical storage environments require elevated pallets and good warehouse ventilation to prevent moisture damage. Shelf life: 24 months. Compatible with manual and mechanical application methods common in tropical agriculture.
